The NYU Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) is seeking HIV/AIDS-related pilot projects applications. The intent of the CFAR Developmental Awards is to support scientific studies for one year to develop preliminary data that will serve as the foundation to peer-reviewed researc applications.

The project should be identified as falling under one or more of the CFAR Program Areas:

  • Developmental Therapeutics, HIV-Associated Diseases, Epidemiology
  • Transmission and Prevention, Vaccine Development, and Viral Pathogenesis

The primary criteria for funding of these awards are:

  • Quality of the science proposed
  • Potential of the applicant to acquire future independent funding for the project
  • Potential of senior post-doc applicants to develop into faculty members at NYU
  • Recruitment into AIDS research of established investigators who have not previously received R01-type awards in AIDS research or a pilot award in the same area of AIDS research
  • Encouragement of new collaborations among the faculty on AIDS-related projects likely to lead to new funding opportunities

Eligibility: This competition is open to all investigators at NYU School of Medicine, The College of Dentistry, Schools at the Washington Square Campus, and the Public Health Research Institute. Eligible applicants include senior post-doctoral fellows, all faculty members, and established investigators on the faculty new to the area of HIV and AIDS-related research, whose proposal fit the criteria listed above. Students are not eligible; established investigators are eligible only if their proposal fit the criteria listed above.

Applications must contain five sections consequently numbered (Strict adherence to the page limitations is required):

  • Face Form (page1)
  • Description, performance sites and key personnel (2 pages)
  • Research methodology (up to 5 pages: single spaced, >11 point type, including specific aims, hypothesis, and research design)
  • NIH Biographical Sketch (up to 2 pages including bibliography for applicant, mentor, and key personnel)
  • Budget ( 1 page followed by a page of budget justification, and a statement concerning the availability of necessary equipment in a mentor’s laboratory, if a mentor is involved)
  • Other Research Support all active, completed and pending support for the applicant, mentor, and key personnel)

All requested information should be in NIH format using PHS 398 forms (Rev. 09/04). These forms can be obtained from the Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA) website here and here.

In addition, please include the NYU Transmittal Form and NYU Investigator Financial Interest Disclosure Form for all applicants, mentors, and key personnel. Because these grants are reviewed and awarded within NYU with funds already received from the NIH, signatures from the School Grants Office are not required.

Project budgets may not exceed 12 months and $50,000 in direct costs. They may not include indirect costs and major equipment. The review of applications will be conducted by the CFAR Scientific Review Committee and awards will be made available by Sept 28, 2007.
