The NYU CFAR has regularly funded at least 3 pilot projects at $50,000 each for young
investigators, or
occasionally for an established investigator who is performing AIDS related
research for the first time. Some years 4 applications have received very similar excellent
scores in the review process, and all 4 projects have been funded, for a total expenditure of
$200,000.
These awards are made only in response to a new research opportunity that requires a rapid method of being funded, that involves a collaboration between at least 2 CFAR investigators, and that is continued only until full outside funding can be obtained or up to a maximum of only one year, or to support the development of a significant new technology. The maximum amount is also $50,000. If no funds remain because they have been used to support pilot projects, an application to support a new research opportunity that is especially meritorious can be supported from discretionary funds with the approval of the Executive Committee.
