Bacteria that can infect the urethra (the opening where urine is passed), vagina, rectum (butt), or throat


How is it transmitted? Unprotected oral, anal or vaginal sex

What are the symptoms? Symptoms can appear about 3-5 days after exposure.

  • In the genitals: Smelly discharge or burning, particularly while urinating.
  • Rectum/butt: discharge, itching, constipation, painful bowel movement, blood in feces or rectal bleeding.
  • Oral: sore throat
  • Generalized (affecting your whole body): rash and swollen, red joints

How is it treated? Your doctor or healthcare provider can prescribe antibiotics for you.

How do I lower my risk? Use condoms for anal, oral and vaginal sex
